Just ahead of the January 12 release of his latest album Vultures, Kanye West posted an apology on his Instagram Tuesday in Hebrew for his past antisemitic remarks.
The rapper, who goes by the name Ye, has faced intense criticism for his antisemitic outbursts, and now is asking forgiveness from the Jewish community.
“I sincerely apologize to the Jewish community for any ‘unintended outburst’ caused by my words or actions,’” he wrote (via Google Translate). It was not my intention to hurt or demean, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused.”
The artist has seen his career implode following a stream of similar antisemitic tirades that have included praise for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Some have blamed him in part for an increase in antisemitic hate crimes in the U.S. and he has been condemned across the board, dropped by CAA and prompted many brands to cut ties, including Adidas, which ended its collaboration to sell Yeezy sneakers. He was recently reinstated to X (fka Twitter) after he was suspended from the platform for seven months. One of his earlier posts appeared to show a swastika symbol inside a Star of David.
His comments also were condemned by his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, who said in a tweet that she stood with the Jewish community, without naming him.
“I am committed to begin with myself and to learn from this experience in order to ensure greater sensitivity and understanding in the future,” he wrote.
“Your forgiveness is important to me, and I am committed to repair and to advancing unity.”
The title track on Ye’s Vultures album references his earlier comments with the lyric: “How I’m antisemitic? I just f**ked a Jewish bitch.”
